Saint Alphonsus Recognized by American College of Radiology
For Excellence in Lung Cancer Screenings and CT Scans
Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center the only facility in Idaho to be accredited
by the American College of Radiology for both CT scans and lung cancer screens
Boise, ID — Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center has been awarded two distinctions by the American College of Radiology (ACR):
- Three-year term of accreditation in computed tomography (or CT scans)
- Accreditation as Idaho's only official Lung Cancer Screening Center
These two distinctions represent the highest level of quality, patient safety, and diagnostic care in CT scans and lung cancer screening. To earn the award, Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center was assessed based on performance in CT image quality, staff qualifications, equipment, quality control, follow-up patient care (such as counseling and smoking cessation programs), and more – earning them the two distinctions from the ACR.
"Typically, symptoms of lung cancer don't present themselves until the cancer has advanced to a stage that's extremely difficult to treat," said Dr. Joseph Brooks, Saint Alphonsus radiation oncologist. "The screenings we offer are based on medical evidence of a smoker's specific history that shows the probability for lung cancer. We are grateful that we can offer this affordable screening and are helping people identify cancer at an early, much more treatable stage."
In December 2013, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended screening of adults aged 55 to 80 years who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer – taking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.
