for exceptionally low 30-day pneumonia readmission rate

Ontario, OR – Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario has received commendation from the national healthcare industry publication Becker's Hospital Review and the Infection Control & Clinical Quality Review for achieving a low readmission rate of patients suffering from pneumonia. Saint Alphonsus Medical Center – Ontario was one of only 64 hospitals recognized for their low pneumonia readmission rate.

The national average rate of 30-day readmission for pneumonia is 17.6 percent, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), while Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario measured at 14.9 percent.

Rates of pneumonia readmission, as highlighted in Becker's Hospital Review, focus on patients that were hospitalized with pneumonia symptoms within 30 days of being initially discharged from the hospital for the same illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that around 900,000 Americans contract pneumonia each year – and of those, 5-7 percent of cases are fatal.
