New Pilot Program Provides More Comprehensive Healthcare for Military Community

A ceremony at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Nampa today helped launch the hospital’s Military and Veterans Health Program. The flags of each branch of the United States military will be permanently displayed in the lobby of the Nampa hospital, a visible reminder of the commitment to provide high quality, compassionate, timely, and culturally competent primary and specialty care to military service members, veterans, and their families.

Under the new program, the hospital’s providers and staff have been trained to respond to the health concerns and challenges specific to the military community. The program’s ongoing training consists of familiarity with the U.S. military service cultures (active duty, reserve, and National Guard), as well as common diseases, injuries, and exposures associated with active duty and deployed service members and veterans.

“We know that military veterans and their families are working and receiving care in our facilities and we often have no knowledge of their military service,” said Travis P. Leach, President of Saint Alphonsus Medical Center – Nampa. “We hope to foster an environment within the Saint Alphonsus Health System that honors our military veterans and their families, recognizes their particular health conditions that may affect employment or healthy living and to become a recognized community partner in the care of those that served our country so selflessly.”

The on-site training helps the hospital’s physicians, nurses and clinicians better understand the physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental impact of operational deployments on service members and their families, including the effects of military service on women’s health. With this enhanced awareness of a patient’s military experience, Saint Alphonsus positions itself to provide a more comprehensive healthcare experience for our military community.

“We have a societal obligation to know our veterans, to help them find employment, to find health providers who understand their unique issues and ultimately to help in re-connection and integration into American society,” Leach added. “As a military service member myself, I have great affection for our service members and their families, and I’m proud that we’re launching this project in Nampa.”

Saint Alphonsus will pilot this new Military and Veteran Program at the Nampa Medical Center, the South Nampa Saint Alphonsus Emergency Department, and the Saint Alphonsus Medical Group Clinic located on 12th Ave. in Nampa. The Milvet program launches on July 1.

As a member of Trinity Health, Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Nampa joins five other Trinity Health hospitals participating in the launch of the Military Veterans Program.
