Saint Alphonsus in Ontario Receives Grant

From the National Breast Cancer Foundation

Ontario, OR – Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario has been awarded a $17,000 grant from the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). The funds will be used for clinical breast exams, mammograms, and ultrasounds for underserved women throughout Malheur, Payette, and Washington Counties.

"One of the biggest challenges keeping women from obtaining their annual mammogram is the financial cost," said Sue Lzicar, a Registered Nurse and Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator for Saint Alphonsus. "This grant will allow us to reach out to those that may otherwise have gone without. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is truly helping us make a difference in our community."

In both Oregon and Idaho, breast cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related deaths for women, indicating the vital need to improve mammography screening rates in both states.

"The Saint Alphonsus Foundation in Ontario has been working hard to provide resources to improve the overall health of our community, especially to those that are underserved or at a disadvantage," says Amber Campbell, Board Chair of the Saint Alphonsus Foundation in Ontario. "This grant is another step in the right direction as we increase access to this important preventative screening to those without means. This is a major win for our community."

The National Breast Cancer Foundation's mission is to help women now by providing help and inspiring hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education and support services.
