State of Idaho Offered Saint Alphonsus Hospital in Nampa
Saint Alphonsus has invited the State of Idaho to survey their current hospital on 12th Avenue in Nampa to consider another suitable use for the four-story facility once Saint Alphonsus moves to their new hospital located at Garrity Avenue and I-84 in 2017.
In a letter to Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter, Saint Alphonsus President and CEO Rodney Reider (Rye-dur) said if the State of Idaho could use the building to provide health services to citizens in the region, “Saint Alphonsus would be willing to donate the remaining building space.”
Once Saint Alphonsus moves to their new hospital location near I-84 and Garrity Avenue in the summer of 2017, the current campus on 12th Avenue will continue to house an emergency room, doctor offices, labs and radiology - services that will take up only a small portion of the 231,000 square foot facility.
Karl Keeler, President of Saint Alphonsus Medical Center-Nampa, said the facility should be of interest to the state. “This hospital was occupied in 1968 and has had several renovations and additions over the years. By starting this review process now, it will give the State of Idaho time to assess the needs of the services they provide and if this building will help them meet those needs,” he said.
“As a Catholic health care system, our mission is to meet the health needs in our communities. Our mission includes assisting those who are working to meet the many other needs that are present in the region," added Keeler. "If the State or another suitable partner can use this facility we will be happy to work with them.
In 1917 the Sisters of Mercy began operating a hospital in a residence at the corner of Ninth Street and Eleventh Avenue South, with a new hospital opening in 1919 on 16th Street. Saint Alphonsus has started construction on a new, $80 million replacement hospital at I-84 and Garrity Avenue that will open the summer of 2017, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Catholic healthcare in Nampa.
