Saint Alphonsus Announces Major Plans

To Meet Healthcare Needs of Canyon County

Saint Alphonsus details their vision for a new replacement

hospital in Nampa near I-84 and Garrity Avenue

Boise, ID -- Saint Alphonsus today announced they will be building a replacement hospital at the corner of I-84 and Garrity Avenue in Nampa, Idaho. The new $80 million facility will replace the hospital currently located on 12th Avenue in Nampa. Hospital officials are planning on opening the new hospital by the summer of 2017, which will also mark the 100th anniversary of the only Catholic hospital in Nampa.

The decision to build a replacement hospital follows a lengthy and thorough evaluation process performed by Saint Alphonsus physicians, board members, consumers, administrators, clinicians, and community leaders. The evaluation process, which started in 2006, ultimately determined that area population increases, combined with developments in medical technology, required a state-of-the-art replacement facility with improved access that the new location on I-84 and Garrity Avenue provides to Canyon County.

"When the current hospital location in Nampa opened in 1968, it was known as Mercy Medical Center. Since that time we have seen over a 300% increase in population in Canyon County, and immeasurable progress in the area of medical technology, treatments, and services," said Karl Keeler, CEO of Saint Alphonsus in Nampa and Ontario. "We want to respond to these new ways of delivering care, in order to provide the vital services that a growing community deserves. Canyon County is one of the fastest growing counties in the U.S., and we know that continuing to offer top-notch care locally is a necessity. We already know that Canyon County is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. With the addition of this new facility, it will also be an even better place to receive quality medical care."

"The healthcare landscape has changed dramatically in the years since Mercy Medical Center was founded," said Rodney Reider, President and CEO of Saint Alphonsus Health System. "Today, there is an increased focus on preventative, out-patient, and high-tech health care, rather than focusing solely on inpatient, or 'sick' care. This new facility in Nampa will meet the needs and desires of today's healthcare consumer; offering high-caliber physicians, equipment, and services - all at a convenient location. This is also a step in the right direction for keeping long-term costs in check for patients through increased efficiency in staffing, infrastructure, communications, and healthy outcomes. All this, in combination with our faith-based approach, will continue the legacy of Catholic healthcare as a compassionate healing presence in Canyon County."

The replacement hospital is slated as an expansion onto the current Saint Alphonsus Medical Center at I-84 & Garrity Avenue campus. When completed, the campus will offer a total of 100-beds and a complete range of healthcare services and providers necessary to meet the current and future demands of local care.

At 240,000 square feet, the facility will feature a complete diagnostic center, 6-suite surgical operating theatre, pre/post-operative holding and recovery rooms, a 10-bed short-stay observation unit, spacious and private patient rooms, and an 18-bed intensive care unit. Built with the desires of the local community and the shifting focus to preventative and ambulatory health in mind, the facility will better accommodate the latest information technology, updated diagnostic and treatment technology, and an environment proven to reduce patient stress and recovery times.

Current services located at the Saint Alphonsus Medical Center – Nampa on 12th Avenue will remain fully operational until they can be transitioned into the new facility in 2017. The 12th Avenue location will continue to provide essential services to support residents in south Nampa, including an emergency department, doctor offices, labs and radiology.

The replacement hospital project will create 250-300 construction jobs over the two-year period, helping to expand the local economy.
