Saint Johns Bible - Gospel of Matthew

The Saint John's Bible at Saint Alphonsus

Saint Alphonsus received a rare Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible made possible by a generous gift from Angels Among Us and donations in honor of the Sisters of the Holy Cross.

This book is one of a limited edition of 299 sets. The first set was presented to Pope Benedict XVI for the Vatican Library in April 2008.

It is of interest to artists, scholars, students, theologians and all who have an interest in experiencing a transformative work of artistic and spiritual discovery.

We continue to welcome visitors who have come to Saint Alphonsus from all over to view the Acts and Gospels book of the Bible on display.

About The Saint John's Bible

The Saint John’s Bible is a work of art and a work of theology.

A team of artists coordinated by Donald Jackson in Wales and a team of scholars in Central Minnesota used the ancient techniques of calligraphy and illumination with an ecumenical Christian approach to the Bible rooted in Benedictine Spirituality. The result is a living document and a monumental achievement.

Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minnesota commissioned the creation of The Saint John’s Bible in 1998. The project was completed in 2011. The Saint John’s Bible is the first such handcrafted Bible to be commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in 500 years. No project of its kind has been undertaken since the advent of the printing press in the 15th century.

The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) was selected as the translation for The Saint John’s Bible.

A team of scribes and artists worked for more than a decade to complete this masterpiece of art and biblical scholarship.
