Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Nampa is the first hospital in the Treasure Valley, and only second in the state, to bring the transformative da Vinci 5 surgical system to patients.

The da Vinci 5, Intuitive’s most advanced surgical system, is a high-tech surgical robot designed to transform surgery by allowing surgeons to feel more and see more throughout the procedure. The system offers enhanced surgical senses that improve efficiency and insights, leading ultimately to better outcomes for patients.

“We have the capability of using this to perform procedures across specialties including cardiac, thoracic, foregut, bariatrics, general, urology, gynecology and even oncology,” said Dr. Christopher Reising, Surgical Service Line Medical Director. “All have simple and complex cases that the da Vinci 5 robot makes better, safer, and faster.”

The first procedure applying the da Vinci 5 will take place today, December 18 at the Saint Alphonsus Medical Center – Nampa, and Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise will be installing its da Vinci 5 before year’s end.

“With the da Vinci 5, we will have additional sensory features that we didn’t have before that will provide us feedback when we’re touching tissue,” said Reising. “There’s also a huge data capability we’ll be able to pull in with future applications including supercomputing, AI, and virtual, augmented reality.”

The robot comes from more than a decade of research and development, built upon the knowledge of more than 14 million procedures that have been performed using various generations of da Vinci technology. The da Vinci 5 surgical system applies dramatic technology innovations without sacrificing the previous da Vinci Xi model, which has been successfully used at Saint Alphonsus Health System for more than a decade.

“By increasing efficiencies and gathering greater insights, advanced surgical technology, like the da Vinci 5, offers us a chance to enable better outcomes, reduce how long patients have to stay in the hospital, and lower the total cost of care for our patients and community,” said David McFadyen, President and CEO of Saint Alphonsus Health System.
