Types of Strokes

Ischemic Stroke

Ischemic Stroke

Accounting for almost 84% of all strokes, an ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel to the brain becomes blocked by a clot or fatty deposit. The blockage prevents vital blood and oxygen from reaching parts of the brain, causing damage or death to the brain cells. It is estimated that at least 31% of these are caused by an embolus, which is a clot that travels from another part of the body and becomes lodged in the brain.

Hemorrhagic Stroke

Hemorrhagic Stroke

Accounting for 16% of all strokes, this one occurs when a blood vessel wall in the brain ruptures, causing bleeding into the surrounding brain tissue. The build up of blood creates pressure on the surrounding brain tissue. These bleeds can be caused by an aneurysm or an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) – a cluster of abnormally formed blood vessels.
