United Way of Treasure Valley and Saint Alphonsus to collaborate

with Trinity Health on programs addressing tobacco use, obesity

Boise, Idaho – Saint Alphonsus today announced that their national sponsor, Trinity Health, would be investing $1.5 million in a Promise Partnership between Saint Alphonsus and the United Way of Treasure Valley. Trinity Health's Transforming Communities Initiative (TCI) is a program that provides grants of $500,000 per year (for three years) to collaborating partners such as Saint Alphonsus and the United Way of Treasure Valley to improve health and well-being in their respective communities.

The programs that will be implemented as part of the Promise Partnership will focus specifically on policy, systems, and environmental changes that can directly impact specifically identified areas of high local need. Goals for the Treasure Valley program include the reduction of tobacco use and obesity – two leading drivers of preventable chronic diseases and high health care costs in Idaho and across the United States.

"We are delighted to be providing the Promise Partnership with this support," said Bechara Choucair, M.D., senior vice president for Safety Net and Community Health at Trinity Health. "Saint Alphonsus and the United Way of Treasure Valley have a strategic collaboration and shared commitment to improving people's lives."

"One-third of Idaho's families are living in economic strain, with a lack of resources to improve and maintain optimal health," said Nora Carpenter, president and CEO of United Way of Treasure Valley. "The Promise Partnership provided by Trinity Health will go a long way in fostering healthier families in our local communities. Not only is this a significant financial investment right here in the Treasure Valley, this grant includes access to renowned subject experts and tools to help make this initiative a success. This will allow us to build infrastructure to lead to systemic and environmental changes for generations to come."

Other partners involved in implementing the Promise Partnership include the City of Boise; the City of Caldwell; Boise, Nampa, and Caldwell School Districts; Central District Health; Southwest District Health; Community Health Clinics; Treasure Valley Education Partnership; St. Luke's Health System and Boise State University.
