Halloween Safety Tips and Events from Saint Alphonsus

Boise, Idaho – As families plan their annual trek through local neighborhoods to trick-or-treat, keeping safety in mind is vitally important. Here are a few key tips to make Halloween safe and fun for everyone:

  • Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling. Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injuries on Halloween.
  • Decorate costumes with reflective tape or have your children wear glow bracelets and necklaces for greater visibility during dusk and darkness.
  • Consider using face paints rather than masks so that vision is not impaired.
  • Costumes, including masks, beards, and wigs should be flame resistant.
  • Plan a route in advance and have adult supervision.
  • Use sidewalks and try not to walk in the street except at appropriate places.
  • Don't cross the street between parked cars.
  • Carry flashlights.
  • Place reflective tape on Halloween bags or sacks.
  • Visit homes that have well-lit entryways, and do not go to homes with porch lights off.
  • Don't run between houses, which can have unseen hazards that can present dangers after dark.
  • Inspect all treats before eating. Throw away any package if it is opened.
  • Costume accessories (swords, knives, etc.) should be made of soft, flexible material.

The public is encouraged to attend the Saint Alphonsus Halloween Safety Fair – occurring at every Urgent Care location throughout the Treasure Valley. The Saint Alphonsus Halloween Safety Fair from 5:00-7:00 pm on October 30th will encourage Halloween safety and fun with free giveaways (flashlights, glow sticks, reflective tape), candy, safety education, and costumes!

Participating locations include the two urgent care clinics in Boise, and community clinics in Eagle, Fruitland, Meridian, Nampa, and Caldwell.
