Observation and Shadowing FAQ's

  • Does GME match observers with providers? It is the responsibility of the observer to arrange their observation and establish observation dates with a provider in their area of interest. The GME office processes the required observation documentation paperwork.
  • How do I find a provider in my area of interest? You can search the Saint Alphonsus physician directory filtered by specialty.
  • How do I contact a provider I am interested in shadowing? Contact the provider’s office you are interested in observing and ask if the provider takes student observers. Make sure to ask for the best way to contact them to make an observation request.
  • How long is a typical observation? An observation can be as short as one day or a few hours per week. Specific hours are to be established between you and the provider. Observations may not span more than 30 days.
  • What is a provider representative? A provider representative is someone responsible for the observer other than the provider being observed, (e.g., clinic manager, physician relations, HR). You do not need to fill out this portion of the Observation Checklist if it is not applicable.
  • Where can I find a COVID or Flu Declination Form? The GME office can provide you with a Saint Alphonsus declination form upon request.
  • What is Adobe E-Sign? Adobe E-Sign lets you easily fill and sign documents from any mobile or desktop device. No software, downloads or sign-ups are required.
  • How does Adobe E-sign work?
    1. GME sends the observation forms via E-sign to the observer candidate to complete and sign their portion.
    2. After the observer has completed their portion the forms are electronically routed to the provider or provider representative for signature.
    3. Once both parties have completed and signed, the forms are electronically routed back to GME for review.
