Just like winter, you can experience seasonal sadness in the summer.

Feeling the blues in the summer isn’t just a song, and it’s more common than you think. Although we typically associate the winter months with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), you can also experience the doldrums in the summer months too. It can be hard to admit you feel sad in the summer because it’s, well, summer. Stay tuned to your emotions, and know you are not alone, and know that there are things you can do to help.

Here’s how to know if you’re feeling Seasonal Affective Disorder or just sad:

  • You feel like the sun is draining your energy
  • You’re having trouble sleeping
  • You’re constantly cranky or upset about something
  • You’re anxious
  • Loss of appetite

What can you do about SAD?

  • Keep sun exposure limited
  • Establish a bedtime routine and give yourself time to unwind
  • Stay as cool as possible and hydrate
  • Choose social events that limit anxiety and large crowds
  • Eat regularly throughout the day
