Making decisions about the foods you eat doesn’t have consequences for just your body
This year we are celebrating 50 years of National Nutrition Month by fueling for our future. Making decisions about the foods you eat doesn’t only have consequences for your body, it also impacts our environment. This month, take time to learn about making informed food choices for creating a healthy you and a healthy planet.
1. Enjoy more plant-based meals and snacks
Red and processed meats have the highest environmental impact of all food groups. Additionally, individuals that follow a balanced, plant-based diet have lower cardiovascular risk. Take care of your body and your planet this month by choosing more plant-based alternatives.
2. Purchase foods with minimal packaging
Single use plastics are hurting our oceans, forests, and our water supply. In an attempt to be more sustainable, shop at bulk food stores, use reusable packaging alternatives like glass and stainless steel, and only purchase what you need to help mitigate waste.
3. Buy in season
Eating in season benefits the planet, your health, and your wallet. Seasonal produce is easier and cheaper for farmers to produce, which means it is more likely to be produced locally and without the assistance of pesticides, waxes, or other preservatives.
4. Start a garden
Gardening cleanses the air and soil. Planting more flowers, fruits, and vegetables means more opportunities to absorb any harmful chemicals from the air and regenerate our soil. This “green” activity is also a great way to get outside and move your body!
Saving the planet isn’t just for superheroes. Small steps towards sustainability have massive impacts on our health and our planet. Whether it’s starting a window garden or reducing your use of single use plastics, take one small step today and fuel the future.
