Hip Pain, Surgery & Treatment
Our hips enable us to bend and straighten our bodies and move our lower limbs. This ball-and-socket joint in the hip is involved in almost every activity you do. Therefore, when your hip is severely damaged or affected by osteoarthritis, activities such as walking, getting up from chairs, standing, using the stairs or participating in sports can become impossible due to hip pain.
Non-surgical Hip Treatment
Non-surgical options such as a joint injection or physical therapy may be the best approach. Our physicians will refer you to therapy when appropriate, or recommend injection treatments if your condition is not significant enough to warrant replacement.
Hip Replacement Surgery
If non-surgical options are unsuccessful in alleviating hip pain, a total hip replacement (THR) may be the best way to regain function and restore the quality of life. In a total hip replacement operation, the surgeon replaces the worn surfaces of the hip joint with an artificial hip joint or implant made of metal and plastic coverings. The surgeon removes the arthritic ball of the thighbone (femur) and the damaged, inflamed cartilage in the hip socket. The ball is replaced by a metal or ceramic ball (implant) attached to a stem, placed into the thighbone. A metal cup relines the socket, creating a new, smooth and durable joint. The goal is to eliminate bone-on-bone friction to create a new, smoothly functioning hip joint that will last for years.
Hip Arthroscopy
Another surgical option may be hip arthroscopy. This allows the surgeon to view the patient's anatomy through a small incision where a scope is inserted into the hip. This minimally invasive technique is sometimes used to help in the treatment of various joint disorders and can result in shorter recovery times when compared with conventional surgical techniques.
Joint preservation is a concept of restoring normal and pain-free function to the hip. Joint preservation is achieved through the use of multi-modality treatment options that can include activity modifications, physical therapy, medications, injections, and sometimes surgery. Just as every patient is different, each patient’s joint preservation strategy is personalized for his or her age, activity level, expectations, and degree of joint dysfunction.
