MitraClip Procedure
We are proud to offer the Mitraclip procedure for the treatment of mitral regurgitation or a leaky mitral valve. A leaking mitral valve occurs when blood leaks back through the mitral valve because the valve does not close properly. The medical term for the leaky mitral valve is mitral regurgitation.
The Mitraclip procedure is offered to qualifying patients as a minimally invasive option that does not require open-heart surgery.
Symptoms of Mitral Regurgitation (leaky mitral valve)
- Abnormal heart murmur or sounds
- Shortness of breath, especially after physical activity or when lying down.
- Tiredness
- Heart palpitations
- Swollen ankles and feet
Mitral Regurgitation Complications
Living with mitral regurgitation can result in many health complications. Some of those are:
- Heart failure
- Atrial fibrillation
- Pulmonary hypertension
How Does the Mitraclip Procedure Treat Mitral Regurgitation?
The Mitraclip procedure is performed through a small hole in the groin, a catheter tube is routed through vessels in the leg up the right side of the heart and then to the left side of the heart and into the mitral valve.
During the procedure, one or more clips may be securely attached to the mitral valve to reduce the regurgitation. This is a very specialized technique performed by an interventional cardiologist. In most cases, the patients are discharged home the following day.
