Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass Procedure

This weight loss procedure involves creating a stomach pouch about the size of a person's thumb. This limits how much a person can eat. Then, the small intestine is divided about 2 feet downstream from the stomach. One end of the intestine is brought up and attached to the small stomach pouch (gastrojejunostomy). The other end of the intestine is attached to the downstream intestinal tract. The gastric bypass restricts how much food a person can eat and results in decreased absorption of the food a person eats.

Gastric Sleeve Procedure

Gastric sleeve surgery which is also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is a bariatric surgery operation. This procedure is typically performed laparoscopically, where small instruments are inserted through multiple small incisions in the upper abdomen. It removes a large portion of the stomach, and leaves behind a narrow “sleeve.” Reducing the size of the stomach by 75%-80%. This helps to restrict calories and reduce hunger. This surgery helps those with severe obesity achieve effective weight loss. Gastric sleeve surgery limits the size of your stomach which restricts the amount of food you can eat. It prompts hormonal changes that help with weight loss. These same hormonal changes also help relieve conditions associated with being overweight, such as high blood pressure or heart disease. Gastric Sleeve surgery is done only after you've tried to lose weight by improving your diet and exercise habits.
