State of Idaho Awards Advanced Designation to Nampa Hospital
Nampa, ID – Saint Alphonsus Medical Center – Nampa has been designated as a Level III Trauma Center by the Idaho State TSE (Time Sensitive Emergency) System and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. The hospital was upgraded from a Level IV Trauma Center during the current evaluation process and is the only certified trauma center in Canyon County.
“This is a significant accomplishment and reflects the commitment of resources and the skill and dedication of our colleagues to provide the highest-level trauma care to patients in Canyon County and beyond,” said Dr. Mark Shapiro, MD, interim Trauma Medical Director at Saint Alphonsus – Nampa. “We now can treat most trauma patients, and if necessary, successfully transfer the most seriously injured to a higher level of care at our Boise Trauma Center.”
Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise is the region’s only Level II Trauma Center.
Level III designation means a hospital has orthopedic and general surgery capabilities available 24/7 and can admit most trauma cases. The addition of Dr. Shapiro, a Trauma Surgeon, as Medical Director contributed to earning the higher designation. Certification as a Trauma Center also requires a medical facility have extra staff and capacity in the Emergency Department to respond to trauma cases, as well as have imaging, laboratory, and specialists available 24 hours a day to treat the most severe and critically injured patients.
“As Canyon County and rural southwestern Idaho continues to grow, we see more and more trauma cases with patients who need advanced medical care,” said Travis Leach, President of Saint Alphonsus Medical Center – Nampa. “Now that our local Trauma Center has achieved Level III status, we are able to care for these patients closer to home, where we know outcomes are better for the patient and their families.”
All four hospitals in the Saint Alphonsus Health System now have been designated as Trauma Centers: Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise is the region’s only Level II Trauma Center, and has been designated and certified by Idaho Time Sensitive Emergency and the American College of Surgeons; Nampa has received its Level III designation by Idaho TSE, and both Saint Alphonsus Medical Center – Ontario and Saint Alphonsus Medical Center – Baker City have been designated as Level 4 Trauma Centers by the Oregon Trauma Program.
