The Saint Alphonsus Spasticity Program is located in the South Tower at Saint Alphonsus Boise hospital on the 6th floor. Please enter the S2 Entrance by the Emergency Room facing Curtis Road. From there, take the central elevator to the 6th floor.

Spasticity is a movement disorder that occurs following an injury to the central nervous system (brain or spinal cord). It is often seen in conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy.

Spasticity causes muscle tightness and increased resistance to movement, thus making the affected body part difficult to move. Muscle spasms and pain are also associated with spasticity. There are varying degrees of spasticity which may result in interference with activities of daily living, walking, and
sleep.

Our goal is to enhance the quality of life of children and adults with spasticity.

Some of our services include:

Medications: Depending upon individual circumstances, medications may be used to help relax muscles and decrease spasticity resulting in less pain and stiffness.

Botox, Myobic or Phenol Injections: While oral medications affect multiple muscles in the body, botulinum injections are most effective for managing specific localized areas. A single injection can relax affected muscles for 3-4 months and may be maximized further when used in conjunction with physical therapy.

Surgery: When other treatment options do not produce the desired result, surgical intervention may be the best option. One surgical intervention is the insertion of an Intrathecal Baclofen Pump which releases small doses of medication to targeted areas. Joint and muscle contractures can also be surgically corrected.

Physical Therapy: Physical and occupational therapy is offered as an an integral component of our services. Therapy may include stretching, positioning, strengthening, neuromuscular education, functional mobility training, gait training and education in order to optimize function and improve independence.
