Anesthesiology-Quantifying Gas Leakage from Endotracheal Tube

Title   Quantifying Gas Leakage from Endotracheal Tube and Laryngeal Mask Airway During General Anesthesia
Description

The objective of this project is to measure the percentage of oxygen, nitrous oxide, and anesthetic agents in air proximal to the patient's lips during general anesthesia. These data will be used to identify the percentage of cases in which there is detectable leakage of oxygen and anesthetic gases.

We will compare rates of leakage across different types of airways and across other variables such as patient and surgery characteristics. The results of this project will be used to modify anesthesia practices and/or devices intended to minimize leaking of oxygen and anesthetic gases during surgical procedures or in critical care areas requiring prolonged intubation/ventilation.

Notes   The research involves placing an instrument that is frequently used in operating rooms near a patient's mouth for a short period of time to quantify gas leakage. There is no experimental equipment involved.
