Healing Garden
Access to natural settings has been shown to offset
the stress of a hospital admission on patients and their loved ones. Saint
Alphonsus has incorporated this therapeutic principle into the rooftop Healing
Garden accessible from the fourth floor of the new Center for Advanced Healing.
The 6,500 sq.-ft., westward-facing garden will be available to patients, family
members, and hospital associates seeking a quiet place for respite and recuperation.
Far more than an aesthetic enhancement, the incorporation of the Healing Garden
is based on research demonstrating the impact of a patient's environment on
their well-being – and
their ultimate potential for recovery. Simple remedies such as natural sunlight
can yield a number of potential benefits, including reduced depression, improved
sleep quality, and decreased perception of pain. Your generous gifts will provide
for the maintenance and enhancement of this serene retreat, ensuring the garden – and
its visitors – continue to flourish for the years to come.

Women’s Wellness Van
A woman's prognosis for surviving breast
cancer is largely dependent upon the stage in which her disease is diagnosed.
Routine mammograms are essential to identifying breast cancer in the earliest
possible, and most treatable, stage. However, Idaho lags behind the rest of
the U.S. in breast cancer screening, ranking last among the 50 states for women
undergoing recommended mammography procedures. Breast cancer remains the second
leading cause of cancer deaths among Idaho women.
Women living below the poverty line, who lack health insurance, who are of an ethnic minority, or who live in rural areas are often the least likely to access screenings for breast cancer. For this reason, the Saint Alphonsus Breast Care Center sponsors a Women's Wellness Van to offer mobile mammography services to disadvantaged women living in remote regions. Featuring an x-ray suite and staffed by highly experienced and American College of Radiology-accredited personnel, the Wellness Van is equipped to offer screenings comparable to those available in fixed healthcare sites. On average, this program provides more than 3,000 women living in 13 rural and frontier counties with screenings each year.
With your generous funding, the Wellness Van fleet will be able to expand to include two vehicles (potentially doubling the number of women served) and to upgrade to digital technology, enhancing screening efficiency and accuracy and ensuring that medically underserved women from southwestern Idaho continue to receive equitable care.

The Nalen Fund for Cancer Patient Assistance
In addition to coping with the
pain, fatigue, and emotional distress of life with cancer, patients also experience
financial hardship stemming from skyrocketing medical expenses paired with
a reduced ability to work. The burden of cancer falls especially hard on uninsured
patients and those with lower incomes. In order to help patients cope with
the overwhelming stressors associated with managing a life-threatening disease,
the Saint Alphonsus Cancer Care Center assists economically disadvantaged individuals
to access charitable assistance programs to cover healthcare expenses and fulfill
other basic needs. However, many low-income patients do not qualify within
these programs' strict eligibility guidelines, despite their urgent financial
situation. Even those who do qualify must often wait for their applications
to be processed – while their
immediate needs go unmet. For these patients, the Cancer Center relies on a
pool of charitable patient assistance monies known as the Nalen Fund to provide
emergency assistance. Originally established in the mid-'90s with a memorial
gift made by the family of cancer patient David Nalen, the Fund supports disadvantaged
patients to meet their expenses related to housing, groceries, utility bills,
daycare, transportation, and other relevant costs. The Nalen Fund allows Saint
Alphonsus to respond to patients' unique needs – without restrictions
that may exclude otherwise deserving individuals – and without delay.
Your gifts will help to ensure that a cancer diagnosis does not result in a
patient being displaced from their home, that cancer patients have the transportation
they need to access timely treatments, and that individuals fighting a life-threatening
illness are able to maintain sound nutrition and continue to provide for their
families.

Behavioral Health Services
There is a growing recognition that mental health
plays as great a role in our overall wellness as the condition of our bodies.
But, while as many as one in 20 Idaho residents may experience a serious mental
illness, Idaho ranks 46th in the nation for state spending on behavioral health.
Committed to healing body, mind, and spirit, Saint Alphonsus has worked to
meet gaps in local behavioral health services for several decades. From outpatient
therapy to inpatient psychiatric care for adults and children, Saint Alphonsus
features a wide range of comprehensive behavioral health services for patients
of all ages. On average, Saint Alphonsus cares for nearly 1,500 psychiatric
patients annually, including close to 250 youth. Most often, these patients
are under observation for a psychotic condition or severe depression that has
impaired their ability to function in their daily lives.
While Saint Alphonsus has extensive experience treating conditions ranging from acute depression to schizophrenia, its Behavioral Health Unit has been stretched to continue to respond to the volume of disadvantaged patients seeking its care. Saint Alphonsus is the only inpatient mental health facility that can accommodate certain high-needs populations, such as specific categories of Medicaid patients. Further, Saint Alphonsus provides the only children's inpatient unit in southern Idaho. As the demand for mental health services continues to exceed local capacity, your contribution to the Behavioral Health Services Fund will facilitate the program expansion necessary to ensure continued access to high-quality care on behalf of all southwestern Idaho patients struggling with mental illness.
